25th of January 2026: "Limbo" at MIZMORIM festival, Basel
Mauricio Silva Orendain won the 4th Mizmorim Composition Competition with his compositional concept of translating acoustic phenomena from dynamic wind in organs into chamber music. The resulting commissioned work was Limbo.
Description of the piece Limbo
The organ is in constant evolution, and new technologies are nowadays marking an important milestone in its flexibility regarding dynamic wind, fulfilling the wishes of composers such as Ligeti. The result is an immense sonic universe that transforms the organ pipe into a unique research tool for generating complex acoustic phenomena, which cannot be theorized without engaging with its physicality. Anchored in the artistic research project "The Plasticity of the Pipe", this composition explores its methodological tool—the Acousmatic Model of the Pipe—to translate these phenomena into chamber music through extended techniques and microtonality, placing Vicentino’s Arciorgano as the pivotal reference instrument for shaping the phenomena into compositional structures.
Instrumentation
Violin, Flute, Clarinet, Trombone, Bassoon, Percussion, Arciorgano
Performance
The work will be premiered on January 25th 2026 at the Mizmorim Festival in Basel.
